In the stone processing industry, marble and granite are the two most common materials. Many customers ask when choosing diamond cutting blades: which is easier to cut, marble or granite? The answer is not absolute, because the physical properties of the two materials differ greatly. Choosing the right saw blade and cutting parameters is the key. Granite is an igneous rock, mainly composed of quartz and feldspar, with a Mohs hardness generally between 6 and 7. Marble is a metamorphic rock, mainly composed of calcium carbonate, with a Mohs hardness mostly between 3 and 5. In terms of hardness, marble is significantly softer and theoretically easier to cut into. However, high hardness does not necessarily mean more difficult cutting. Although granite is hard, its structure is dense and its particles are uniform, making cutting relatively stable.


Marble has low hardness but high brittleness, often accompanied by texture, cracks, and cavities inside. If the feed speed is too fast or cooling is insufficient during cutting, edge chipping, corner loss, and cracking are likely to occur. Granite has high hardness but better toughness, and the cutting edge is relatively neat and less prone to chipping. Therefore, in actual operation, marble requires higher technical and process requirements.

Marble cutting usually uses fine-grained, soft-bond diamond cutting blades with sharp segments and smooth chip removal for a smoother cut. Granite cutting requires hard and wear-resistant segments, usually using medium-coarse grain, hard-bond formulations to resist wear from hard quartz particles. For marble cutting, it is recommended to use higher speed, lower feed speed, and sufficient water cooling to prevent thermal stress cracks. Regardless of the stone, it is recommended to make a trial cut first and observe the cut quality and blade wear.
For fine processing such as home countertops and background walls, using a dedicated fine-cutting blade for marble can achieve better results. For large-scale operations such as exterior walls and floors, hot-pressed or high-frequency welded blades are more durable for granite. During construction, attention should also be paid to equipment power matching, firm blade clamping, and correct cutting direction.
In terms of hardness, marble is easier to cut into. However, in terms of process difficulty, marble is more prone to chipping and cracking and requires more precise control. Although granite is hard, as long as the right dedicated saw blade is selected and stable parameters are maintained, the cutting effect is equally ideal.
